So where was William Chatfield baptised?
The 17th May 1755 at nearby Lindfield the son of Thomas and Mary Chatfield seems the most likely. But there is a clerical error as Thomas and Elizabeth AWCOCK were baptising in Lindfield (Thomas in 1754) and Maresfield (John 1759, Betsy 1761 and Thomas 1763) following their marriage in Lindfield on the 6th July 1753.
William and Hannah's daughter Charlotte amrried a Thomas AWCOCK on the 17th November 1839 at Maresfield - perhaps her cousin.
A Thomas CHATFIELD was buried at Maresfield on the 22nd April 1802 and Elizabeth CHATFIELD on the 5th May 1796.

If this baptism can be accepted then Thomas CHATFIELD baptised on the 2nd March 1728 at Lindfield the son of John and Anne CHATFIELD would provide his ancestry.
John CHATFIELD and Anne ASHFOLD were married by licence on the 19th September 1718 at Lewes, St. Annes
