The World Wide Web (WWW)
Access is provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) - BT, AOL, Freeserve, Pipex, Tiscali
They act as 'railway stations', 'post boxes'

Access to ISPs is by way of a telephone line and a modem (MOdulator DEModulator)
Connections can be dial-up, ISDN or Broadband
So, need an ISP, Modem, 'phone line and a browser - Internet Explorer, Mosaic, Opera

WWW sites have a Uniform/Unique Resource Locator - URL
http:// - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
www. - World Wide Web
Domain name
Type of organisation
eg http://www.bbc.co.uk
The country of origin appears in this case at the end (UK), but other endings .com, will not nor will US sites.

ac - academic
edu - education
co - company
com - company
gov - government organisation
mil - military
net - network or internet provider
org - any other organisation
au - Australia
ca - Canada
de - Germany
es - Spain
fr - France
ie - Republic of Ireland
jp - Japan
