The Internet for Beginners
Course notes (6)

Search Engines
A search engine is good when you have a specific search - say, three keywords or more
There is no human selection or categorisation
For searching not browsing

'Spiders' search the net for sites and new pages and feed information to search engine
Indexed by every word on the page
Search engine identifies these pages in a database.

Specialised Directories
These are specialised directories about a specialised topic

Newsgroups
These allow Internet users to communicate with people having like issues, concerns, problems and issues.
Newsgroups - not much to do with news, based on Usenet groups of 1979, before WWW.  Usenet needed a bit of software called 'dejavu'.  that went bust to be picked up by Google.
Just about anything goes.

Mailing Lists
The message arrives as an email in  List (one at a time) or Digest (a number together)
Need to subscribe (free)
Look out for FAQ (frequently asked questions)
Mailing lists are moderated
