The Internet for Beginners
Course notes (4)

Searching the Internet
Most finding tools fall into one of three categories
General Directories;  Search Engines;  Specialised Directories
Many are hybrids

Directories - a large collection of links arranged in categories.
The sites are hand-picked by human beings (payment helps)
Sites are selective and categorised - The wheat not the chaff
Size of database is small and based on the title page
(A database is searched not the entire Internet.
2 - 3 million entries typically in a directory (1 - 3 billion (US) in a search engine)

Web directories are designed primarily for browsing and general questions
They are a good start whwen you have a general question such as
'what is bird flu?' , 'What museums are there in Pompeii',  'What's Goa like?'

Yahoo can be customised to become a Portal
