Rocky III

Tom as Rocky III This costume was my Christmas present to my 16 year old brother Tom. This photo show him wearing the costume, and Algernon Williams's hat, on stage at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on the 9th of January, 2001 - see here for more details as to why he's doing that. =)

I made the top, shorts and belt over the Christmas holidays 2000-01. Tom painted the belt, and since then he's also made elbowpads, armbands and gauntlets. Also, he now has some white tights, and is planning to turn the shorts into sparkly pants.

Top

The top was a red vest top from Dorothy Perkins. I cut the bottom of it off and sewed a piece of material from a grey t-shirt across the bottom. The grey portion was splattered (technical term) with watered-down silver fabric paint, then I drew on black lines with marker pen. The white and black digits on the red part are made of felt, sewn on. The gold dots round the neckline are gold fabric paint, but hopefully these will soon be replaced with proper studs.

Shorts

These were a pair of Tom's old PE shorts, that I splattered with watered-down silver fabric paint and drew on with black marker (as with the top).

Belt

The front of the belt is posterboard, covered with black fabric and painted with gold and silver fabric paint. I sewed belt loops on the back of this, and it's then worn with a normal belt. I sewed belt loops onto the shorts too, to hold it in place.

Gloves

The gloves are ladies black elbow gloves, with the ends of the fingers cut off and hemmed. I originally did these for my 1984 Pearl costume, but I let Tom borrow them.

Armbands and Elbowpads

Rocky armband and elbowpad

Rocky gauntlet

The armbands are made from the spare piece of material that I cut from the bottom of the top. The gold dots are fabric paint. The gauntlets are cardboard covered in fabric, with studs on (I think). I don't know how Tom did the rest, I'll get back to you on that.
