First Generation
James FITT  (1681, 1685) Innkeeper of Winchester.
Born c.1646, married 7th January 1678, in Winchester Cathedral, to Joane BLAKE who died 1721 as Joan KENT.   James died 1685,  
Only one baptism of his children has been found in Winchester, but from his will the following has been assumed.
i Susanna married John NEWBY.
ii John baptised 15th June 1681 St Thomas, Winchester and buried 20th November 1734, Gosport.
iii Thomas born c.1681.


There is also a James FITT tailor of Winchester and
a Henry FITT (died 13th January 1705 in 29th year) of Old Alresford at about this time.  
In his will Henry mentions a brother James with a wife Sarah and a daughter Sarah of Winchester.  
James FITT the tailor had a wife named Sarah and a daughter, Sarah REEVES.


In 1715 Thomas  received the 'Star' at Hursley from Joan KENT, and  is mentioned in her will of 1729.  
Joan was his mother remarried.
Second Generation
These are the children of Thomas FITT, Shoemaker (1715) and yeoman (1733) of Hursley, born. c.1681, married Margaret ?, and buried 30th January 1760, Hursley.
Thomas died 20th January, Hursley and buried 21st January 1736, Hursley.  
The MI is now against the west wall of Hursley churchyard. Children:

ii Thomas.  Baptised 30th October 1722 at Hursley


On the 24th July 1740, James took on an indenture to hold Parsonage Quarter, Little Mead, Brickhouse Meadow waste of manor of Merdon  in Hursley for eleven years.  
Also mentioned is Ratlake lane, Ladwell Hill.

Third Generation
These are the children of James FITT, yeoman of Hursley, baptised 2nd November 1719, Hursley and married 18th February 1740, in Hursley to Mary NEWLAND, born c.1709, died 27th October 1759 and buried 30th October 1759, Hursley.
James died on the 11th November 1784, and buried on the 14th November 1784 at Hursley, where there is an MI.

ii   Anne  baptised 14th April 1741, married John PERN of Sutton Scotney, on 4th October 1763 and was buried on 31st July 1814, at Hursley.

James   yeoman of Rookley, baptised 25th  May 1742 and married 6th September 1768 Mary NOYCE (1748 - 1818).   Buried 31st July 1814, at Hursley. 
iv   Edward    baptised 26th January 1744 and married 'Fanny' Frances Elliott of Wherwell (c.171753 - 1818) and buried 18th August 1811 at Hursley of 'Pitt'.
v   Christian (daughter) baptised 26th December 1745 and buried 13th February 1746, Hursley.
vi  William baptised 26th December 1745 and buried 4th Jan 1746, Hursley.
vii Sarah   baptised 20th March 1749, married Moses MORGAN on the 14th February 1776 at Barton Stacey.

x William yeoman of Hursley at Standon, baptised 23rd February 1753 and married 11th November 1777 to Mary LAVINGTON.  Buried 10th January 1819.



On 28th January 1772 Thomas took on the lease of Bakers farm, North end Hursley for 14 years
and from 10th October 1775 - 1789 Lands of The Pelican , from Magdalen College, Oxford - which he no doubt sublet for profit!
These are the children of Thomas FITT maltster of Hursley, baptised 30th October 1722 Hursley and married (1) 28th July 1754, in South Stoneham, to Sarah SNUGGS, (daughter of Charles SNUGGS and Ann(e) ?) buried: 10th June 1779, Hursley,
Married (2) 5th April 1783 in Hursley to Elizabeth SMITH , born c.1746, and died 13th February 1801, buried 17th February 1801, at Hursley. 
Thomas died 29th December 1799, buried 3rd January 1800, Hursley.  Pec. will 1800.

In James was involved in the lease and release of house, formerly the 'Star' to Savage Bear of Hursley, Gent. for £420.

Married (2) 21st July 1824, in St. Thomas, Porsmouth. Licence, to Julia LOE, (daughter of Daniel LOE and Elizabeth LOE of Selborne) died 17th October 1852, buried: 20th October 1852, Cheriton.
Jacob died 27th February 1864, MI Cheriton, buried: 3rd March 1864, Cheriton.

These are the children of Charles FITT , Farmer of Priory farm, Selborne (son of Thomas FITT1722 -1799 and Sarah SNUGGS 1723 - 1779)
Baptised 18th June 1758 Hursley, married 19th October 1798, in Selborne by Licence, Jane SMITH, who died 11th June 1832, and buried 15th June 1832 age 85, Selborne.
In 1794 Charles took on the tenancy of Priory farm, Selborne
Charles was buried, 11th May 1843, Selborne.

i Harriet FITT-SMITH  Born 19th June 1796, Selborne, and married 26th November 1814 Jeremiah SCARVELL, yeoman of Selborne.  In 1881 Harriet was living in Littlehampton Sussex with her three unmarried children, Jane Rose, Jeremiah Thomas and Harriett.
ii Charles FITT-SMITH born 18th October 1797 and buried 21st December 1842 in Selborne.
iii Frances FITT born 13th May 1799 Selborne and reaching her 100th birthday, dying  in 1900
iv Benjamin Born 7th May 1800.  Took over the tenancy of Priory farm from his father.  Married Dinah CHRISTMAS (1827 - 1873) on 14th Janaury 1847 in Kennington and died 23rd Janury 1869.  Will 1869.
v Edward. Baptised 7th  December 1803, Selborne.  Farmer at Borhunt, Empshott and then Faringdon.  Married Mary Ann McCarthy in September quarter of 1853. Died 30th April 1893 age 89 at Faringdon.
vi Frederick Warne. Baptised 26th September 1806, Selborne, married Sarah DANCASTER on 29th March 1832 in Selborne.  Miller at Selborne.
vii Eliza. Baptised 14 Nov 1809, Selborne.  Married Jesse RIVERS on the 9th May 1838 at Selborne.
viii Arthur James Ward (Warne).  Baptised 27th November 1811 and married Eliza EADE ( - 1881) on the 20th June 1837, at Selborne.  Farmer at Selborne and then farmer and miller on the Isle of Wight.  Died 21st November 1879.



In 1814, James is described as yeoman of Headbourne Worthy.
In 1822 of Westley in Sparsholt.
1830 Wm. Eames of Farringdon to Jas. Fitt of Westley, Sparsholt, yeoman in consideration of £800 of parcels of land called Oat close, Noare, Yonder Noare, Cross mithes pieces in Farringdon.

Fifth Generation
These are the childrenof James  FITT born. c.1775, married (1) 8th October 1799, in Crawley, Sally PERN (no issue), married (2) c.1814, in Headborne Worthy, Mary PERN, born c.1774, died 30th May 1844, Sparsholt. James died 28th June 1846 and  buried 3rd Jul 1846, Sparsholt.
i  Charlotte married Richard Hinton BAILEY (c.1793 - 1882) of kings Sombourne, on the 1st of December 1820

'Agriculturist'
In 1809 Jacob leased Beresleigh farm near East Meon from Richard Eyles
By 1824 he was living in  Cheriton and by the 1851 census farmed 800 acres, employing 13 men.

These are the children of Jacob FITT, baptised 20th April 1786 Hursley and married (1) Martha FAULKNER (1790 - 1821) on 14th June 1819 at Farnham - no issue and
(2) Julia LOE (1804 - 1852) on 21st July 1824 at Portsmouth.  Jacob died  on the 27th February 1864 age 78.

Benjamin took over Priory farm,Selborne from his father and in the 1851 census farmed 300 acres employing 9 Labourers.

These are the children of  Edward FITT  and Mary Ann McCARTHY   
Mentioned in the 1830 riots.  Farmer at Borhunt, Empshott and then Faringdon, He was a miller at Selborne in the 1850,s. Edward died 30th April 1893 age 89, at Faringdon. MI.

In 1835 Frederick is listed as a draper at Selborne, but from 1836 he is shown as a miller and in 1861 having a steam threshing machine at Selborne.  In 1878 he is listed in White's directory at 24 Quay street, Fareham.
His son, Samuel Smither, was also in Fareham by 1878.

These are the children of Frederick Warne FITT   Draper, farmer and miller. Baptised 26th September 1806 Selborne and married 29th March 1832 to Sarah DANCASTER, (daughter of William Smither Dancaster).

By 1853, Arthur James Ward is described as yeoman of Newchurch IOW and in  1856 occupied a water mill at Knighton, IOW.
In the 1871 census at Upper Knighton Mill, Newchurch.   Miller and farmer of 160 acres employing 4 labourers and 2 boys.

These are the childen of Arthur James Ward (Warne) FITT  farmer and miller.  Baptised 27th November 1811, Selborne, married 20th June 1837, in Selborne by licence, Eliza EADE, born c.1814 and died 5th August1881.
Arthur James Ward died 21st November 1879, Newchurch, IOW.

1839 James Pern is described as a gentleman farmer and yeoman of Westley
4th June 1845 Tenant in trust at Wonston of '1 messuage  and a yardland late Atts and a messuage and two yardlands late Herrings in Wonston'.
On the 12th March 1846 with his wife gave an altar to parish church of Sparsholt.
'1871 JPF' to be seen on the end gable of stable at Westley. (Now Sparsholt College).
1878 Whites directory at  Westley and Manor farms.

Sixth Generation
These are the children ofJames Pern FITT Gentleman farmer born c.1810, Worthy (1851 census), married (1) c.1835, in Lymington, Elizabeth NEVILL, (daughter of Thomas NEVILL and Sarah ?) died 29 Sept 1833, Hursley, buried: 3 Oct 1833, Hursley. 'of Westley', married (2) 31 Aug 1835, in Lymington (Licence), Ann NEVILL, born c.1815, (daughter of Thomas NEVILL and Sarah ?) died 23 Jan 1892.  James died 20 Dec 1878, Sparsholt.

These are children of Arthur FITT , Fishhawker, baptised 15th October1848 at Selborne, buried 24th August 1893 and  married 10th February 1872, in West Worldham to Jane GOODENOUGH .

These are the children of  Gilbert FITT , Journeyman butcher.  born 6th December 1858, Selborne, married 4th May 1884, in the Parish church, St Leonards, Hastings to  Caroline SMITH
In 1884 he was at 6 Mercatoria  and in 1890 at 9 Clarence Road, St. Leonards.
In 1901 Gilbert was with the family and his second wife, Emily, at East Hoathly, Sussex, a butcher's assistant.
Gilbert died 1909, Brighton.

Arthur Henry FITT was a master butcher and owned a butcher's shop at 153 Springfield Road, Brighton.  
After the second world war he was joined  in the business by his son, Arthur George FITT.
During the Great War he served with the 13th battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment.
Seventh  Generation
These are the children of Arthur Henry FITT, my grandfather,  born on the 21st September 1890, St Leonards, Hastings and married on the 26th December 1912, in the Parish church, Littlehampton to Mary Ann COOPER , born 15th November 1887, South Kensington, London, (daughter of George COOPER and Mary Ann WEST) and died June 1975, Brighton.
Arthur Henry Fitt died 1954, Brighton.

In 1881 James Nevill Fitt and the family were at Pouchenend, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, but in 1889 had moved to the Manor House Hockliffe, Bedfordshire where he and his wife are buried.
He published two books ' Hunting, Steeple-Chasing, and Racing Scenes'. Illustrated by B. Herring. Edited by J. N. Fitt. 34. James Peddie; London, [1869.] 4o.
and 'Covert-Side Sketches' Samson Low & Co.: London, 1879.
This is the child of James Pern FITT (1810 - 1878) and Elizabeth NEVILL (c.1810 - 1833)
James Nevill FITT born 27th September 1833, married 7th Oct 1858, in East Meon, Ann Maria RAY.  
James Nevill died on  26th May 1896, and Ann Maria on 29th June 1905.
