Waffle Scarf

By Anna Waites

This chunky scarf is warm and cosy. Mine is a collar scarf but you could just keep on knitting until it's the length you want, and skip the buttonhole, for a normal scarf.

You Will Need:
Approx. 100g chunky/bulky weight yarn (I used Sirdar Denim Chunky)
8mm needles
A suitable button

Special Stitches
K1B - knit one below. Insert the right needle into the loop below the stitch on the left needle, and knit into it. Like so:

PUK - pick up, knit. Pick up the extra loop formed on the previous row and knit into it, along with the loop on the needle.

Pick up the extra loop:

And knit into it with the loop on the needle:

k - knit
p - purl
pbl - purl into back loop
sl - slip (knitwise unless otherwise specified)
k2tog - knit two together
yo - yarn over

Pattern

Cast on 17 stitches. Knit one row, slipping first stitch.

Waffle pattern:
Row 1: Sl, [K1B, k1] across.
Row 2: Sl purlwise, [PUK, k1] across until 2 stitches remain, PUK, pbl.
Row 3: Sl, [k1, K1B] across until 2 stitches remain, k2.
Row 4: Sl purlwise, [k1, PUK] across until 2 stitches remain, k1, pbl.

Repeat these four rows until scarf is 55cm/22" long, ending with row 4.

Work following row for button hole:
Sl, [K1B, k1] 4 times, k2tog, yo, [K1B, k1] three times.

Work rows 2-4 of waffle pattern, then rows 1-4 once more.

Cast off. Attach button in the middle of the scarf, a couple of rows down from the cast-on row.
